Hollow Mountain Walk in Northern Grampians (2.2km)

Hollow Mountain is located in the North of Grampians National Park, a solid 40-minute drive from Halls Gap. The walk to the summit is short but strenuous; only 2.2km return. The title “hollow” is explained by the number of caves and overhangs you’ll pass on the ascent. The portal lookouts in the rock make this walk unique; it’s a hotspot for rock climbing too. The trailhead is well sign posted from the carpark to the base of the cliff. Follow the arrows up and over boulders, along narrow ledges and take the opportunity to explore numerous caves before arriving at the summit. At the summit you will be rewarded with views overlooking Mt. Stapylton (famous for rock climbing) and the Wimmera plains. Stop and observe the more adventurous folk bouldering and be prepared to stray from the beaten track and discover for yourself why Hollow Mountain has impressed so many.

How to get to Hollow Mountain:

  1. Travel towards the Hollow Mountain Carpark. **
  2. From Halls Gap travel north along Mt. Zero Rd for around 35-kilometres or bypass Halls Gap by following the Western Highway into the Northern region.
  3. The walk begins opposite the toilet block. Follow signs to the trailhead and use the arrows for guidance to the summit.
** Access roads are unsealed but suitable for most cars.

Highlights:

  • Photography
  • Rock climbing/bouldering
  • Bushwalking
  • Aboriginal paintings
  • Panoramic views

Best Conditions:

Hollow Mountain is accessible all year round; however, Spring and Autumn provide ideal conditions. Both sunset and sunrise are visible from the summit.

Difficulty:

Moderate-Difficult. Many high steps, narrow ledges, boulders and short steep climbs can be found along the track up. Only suitable for those with good health and high-level of fitness. Free Camping? Camping is permitted at Mt. Stapylton Camp Ground only a 10-minute drive but must be booked via Parks Victoria. . Dogs? Not permitted. Toilets? Yes, flushing toilets and running water can be found in the carpark. A short drive to Mt. Zero Picnic Area will also provide wood fired BBQ facilities and toilets.

My Review: @fletcherrsmith

“Hollow Mountain was a breath of fresh air while visiting the Grampians over the Easter holidays. We practically had the place to ourselves from the moment we arrived in the carpark. I really enjoyed the more “untouched” feeling. There’s no handrails and very few manmade steps, it’s well and truly off-the-beaten-track. Make sure to pack a drink bottle and bring some snacks as you could easily spend a day here.”

Nature never fails to amaze me. My favourite adventures are spent exploring waterfalls and beaches. I'm always searching for the unknown and won't let anything hold me back... not even school.

  1. Amazing walk, bit slippery if you encounter rain. Some tricky bolder passages to negotiate. Would suggest not for the little ones (preschoolers), and hiking shoes a must if any chance of rain. Well worth the experience away from the crowds. Grade 4 hike for a reasonable level of fitness, and people take their RUBBISH home like good hikers should. Cleanest site of the Grampians .
